In the early 1950s, Chairman Mao initiated an ambitious campaign to capture the hearts and minds of the Chinese people.

Artists and designers were assigned the task of spreading the message of the Revolution. Their most effective medium became the Propaganda Poster.

Classical themes and motifs were blended with modern styles and techniques. Traditional folk art and painting were commingled with Soviet Socialist Realism and the dynamic gestures of Chinese opera. Thousands of original Propaganda Posters were designed and tens of thousands were printed. Circulation was widespread and all-encompassing. The posters could be found on the walls of schools, hospitals, factories and homes.

The 30 postcard images in this book have been selected from the Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Center.
